Arda better, faster for Galatasaray

There have been concerns of late about the number of homegrown players coming through in the Turkish league, but one youngster has been catching much attention - 19-year-old Galatasaray SK midfielder Arda Turan.

Swift rise
Arda joined his his local amateur club Bayrampasa Altintepsispor when he was nine years old, but quickly his technique and combative playing style were spotted by Galatasaray scouts and when he was 12 the Istanbul giants took him on. He quickly rose up the ranks into the senior youth side, before he was promoted to the professional team under coach Gheorghe Hagi, who gave Arda his Super League debut against Denizlispor in the final match of the 2004/05 season.

Manisaspor chance
Hagi then left and new coach Erik Gerets was less eager to blood Arda, giving him only occasional substitute appearances. But an opportunity opened up when Vestel Manisaspor's former Turkey coach Ersun Yanal asked to take Arda on loan in January 2006, guaranteeing to field him regularly. Galatasaray accepted the offer and Arda joined Manisaspor, where as right-back he made 15 appearances, scoring twice. Soon the Galatasaray coaching staff were regretting even his temporary departure as the right-sided slot became a problem position for the eventual champions.

Spectacular bow
This summer, having stood out for Turkey in the UEFA European Under-19 Championship in Poland, Arda returned to Galatasaray and moved back into midfield. He not only secured a regular place in domestic football but also was handed a UEFA Champions League debut in the first leg of their third qualifying round tie against FK Mladá Boleslav. It was a spectacular bow -he scored twice and made another goal in a 5-2 victory that essentially sealed a group stage return.

International appearances
Even in the competition proper, Arda has excelled and was voted Galatasaray fans' man of the match against FC Girondins de Bordeaux and Liverpool FC. Turkey coach Fatih Terim was also impressed by the teenager and called him up for the senior friendly against Luxembourg in August. Arda made his debut in that match and has remained in place for the UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying wins against Malta, Hungary and Moldova.

Still young
Of course, it is a lot of pressure to handle for a young player and the rush of blood to his head that preceded his sending-off in the 3-1 defeat at Bordeaux that ended Galatasaray's hopes of even a UEFA Cup place brings a reminder that he still has developing to do. But after his performances so far a certain amount of hype and expectation is inevitable.


UEFA da Arda'yı farketti!

UEFA, resmi internet sitesinde "Arda, Galatasaray için daha iyi, daha hızlı" başlığıyla verdiği haberde Galatasaray'ın genç yıldızı Arda Turan'ın başarılı performansına dikkat çekti.

Haberde, sarı kırmızılı oyuncunun genç yaşta hızlı bir şekilde yükseldiği belirtilerek, şu ifadelere yer verildi:

"Türkiye alt yapılarında birçok iyi futbolcu yetişiyor. Fakat bunlar arasında Galatasaray'ın 19 yaşındaki orta saha oyuncusu Arda Turan, dikkatleri daha fazla üstüne çekiyor. Sarı kırmızılı oyuncu, ilk kez 2004-2005 sezonunda teknik direktör Gheorghe Hagi döneminde Denizlispor'a karşı forma giydi. Fakat teknik direktör Erik Gerets Arda'yı onatmakta pek istekli olmayınca, genç oyuncu Vestel Manisaspor'a kiralandı. Vestel Manisaspor'da iyi bir porformans gösteren Arda Turan, 15 maçta forma giydi ve 2 gol attı. Sarı kırmızılı oyuncunun performansı Galatasaray'da beğenilince, genç yıldız eski takımına geri döndü. Arda, Şampiyonlar Ligi'ndeki ilk maçını eleme turunda FK Mlada Boleslav takımına karşı oynadı. Göze hoş gelen oyununun yanı sıra 2 de gol attı. Genç yıldız, Şampiyonlar Ligi'nde Bordeaux ve Liverpool maçlarında gösterdiği mükemmel performansla taraftarların gönlünde maçın adamı seçildi. Arda'nın başarılı performansı Türkiye Milli Takım Teknik Direktörü Fatih Terim tarafından da beğenilince, genç yıldız ilk kez Ağustos ayında Lüksemburg'a karşı oynanan maçta milli formayı giydi ve Malta, Macaristan ve Moldova maçlarında da milli formayı bırakmadı. Arda'nın omuzlarındaki yük çok fazla. Galatasaray'ın, Bordeaux'ya 3-1 mağlup olduğu maçta attığı kafa, takımının UEFA Kupası'ndaki umutlarını söndürdü. Tüm bunlara rağmen genç yıldız gösterdiği performans ile vazgeçilmezler arasında olacağı kesin."
